El Gobierno de los Estados Unidos anunció hoy que este mes destinará 6 millones de dosis contra el coronavirus, de un lote inicial de 25 millones, para América Latina y de allí una parte será destinada a la Argentina.
La lista de países que recibirán vacunas también incluye a Brasil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Perú, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panamá, Haití, otros países de la comunidad caribeña, y la República Dominicana.
La administración de Joe Biden había confirmado días atrás que donaría 80 millones de vacunas y hoy detalló que entregará un lote inicial de 25 millones.
Un 75% de las vacunas de esa primera parte, es decir, unos casi 19 millones, se distribuirán a través del mecanismo Covax, en tanto que lo restante será por acuerdos bilaterales en base a las prioridades.
En la donación de los Estados Unidos entrarán vacunas de Pfizer y BioNTech, Moderna y Johnson & Johnson, aunque la Argentina por el momento rechazó la posibilidad de recibir dosis de Pfizer a través de Covax, ya que no existe un contrato con ese laboratorio.
El pasado 26 de mayo funcionarios del Gobierno de Biden afirmaron que Estados Unidos repartirá cerca de 80 millones de vacunas contra el coronavirus y que América Latina “será un foco” de esa decisión, al tiempo que indicaron que seguirán conversando con la Argentina sobre el ofrecimiento de enviar aviones para traer dosis.
El canciller Felipe Solá durante un encuentro con la delegación que Biden envió a Ecuador para la asunción del presidente de ese país, Guillermo Lasso, encabezada por la embajadora estadounidense ante Naciones Unidas, Linda Thomas Greenfield, y con el director para el Hemisferio Occidental del Consejo de Seguridad de la Casa Blanca, Juan González, ofreció enviar aviones para el transporte de vacunas.
González y Thomas Greenfield indicaron que se comprometieron a seguir conversando con la Argentina sobre el ofrecimiento que hizo Solá de enviar aviones a Estados Unidos para buscar vacunas.
“Vamos a proporcionar 80 millones de vacunas y, por supuesto, América Latina es una de las regiones más afectadas del mundo, y será un foco de nuestros esfuerzos para combatir la pandemia”, sostuvo González.
El funcionario de la Casa Blanca señaló que la administración de Biden distribuirá las vacunas a través del sistema Covax pero “también de forma bilateral y mirando a los países que tienen los casos más altos de variantes y picos de contagios”.
Tras señalar que la Argentina actualmente “tiene la tasa más alta de infecciones del mundo”, González fue consultado sobre el ofrecimiento que hizo Solá y señaló que están conversando sobre el tema.
“Ciertamente, uno de los desafíos será la entrega de las vacunas y ellos hicieron esa oferta y nos comprometimos a consultarlos estrechamente mientras el presidente (Biden) avanza con la decisión de la administración de compartir las vacunas”, indicó el funcionario estadounidense.
